How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

 

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As the Engineering Director, you will play a crucial role in driving new product initiatives and developing new process improvements, while being an integral part of the leadership team for Radiodetection.   Responsible for the life cycle of product development, you will direct the design and development of new products and the upgrade and maintenance of existing product lines to ensure strong performance in the market.  As the leader of a c.60 person multi-site, global organisation of software, mechanical, electronic, and compliance engineers, the successful Engineering Director will have broad based engineering expertise as well as the ability to lead and develop others.

1.    Leadership Engineering Team

 

  • Develop and lead organisation recognized for developing quality products that exceed customer expectations
  • Drive strategy, architecture, and development of the business systems, hardware, and software solutions
  • Build and motivate a high performing team with strong leadership and technical skills capable of excelling in a dynamic, growing organisation
  • Provide leadership for growth activities as a key leader in the business
  • Develop and manage departmental expense and capital budgets
  • Provide oversight to 3rd party organisations that support hardware and software initiatives
  • Actively support employee training and development
  • Promote a culture of trust and engagement, embodying the SPX core values

 

2.    Product Design and Technical Expertise

 

  • Lead new product development and R&D initiatives
  • Ensure the regular and timely release of innovative, high-quality products that meet market demands
  • Champion the voice of the customer for the engineering team to encourage continued alignment with market needs
  • Manage technical aspects of the hardware and software development roadmap
  • Test, upgrade, and maintain existing current and legacy product lines
  • Ensure products are launched within budget and on schedule
  • Ensure product compliance and safety requirements are met
  • Develop and maintain product design, product drawings, and bills of materials, including parts obsolescence management
  • Provide technical support, training, and feedback to other departments

3.    Collaboration and Communications

 

  • Collaborate regularly with other departments, including Product Management, Marketing, Supply Chain, Operations, Sales, and Training to ensure effective integration and coordination
  • Facilitate and enhance communication between Engineering, Product Management, and Operations
  • Provide timely, proactive communication regarding the status of product development activities and changes impacting projects
  • Coordinate product planning with Product Management in support of customer driven product plans
  • Provide accurate technical information in assessing feature options, cost impact, and timing constraints
  • Develop and communicate core metrics 
  • Actively participate in key industry groups

4.    Product Management and Continuous Improvement

 

  • Implement and manage a process-based framework to deliver timely, high-impact product launches and maximize engineering capacity
  • Develop and improve engineering processes to ensure predictability, consistency, timeliness, and reliability or results, with agility to meet market demands
  • Integrate new processes, tools, and methods to increase development productivity and timeliness
  • Prioritize and direct VAVE projects
  • Stay updated on industry trends and advancements, proactively recommending relevant improvements 
  • Actively strengthen Radiodetection’s engineering culture and processes
  • Other projects as assigned that relate to the overall goals of the department and organization

 

What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)

 

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

 

Required Experience

 

  • Extensive experience in a broadly-scoped engineering leadership position
  • Experience managing a global, cross-functional integrated development team of systems, software, hardware, and support engineers and engineering managers

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in new and emerging technologies and engineering development tools
  • Prior software application management experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading a product development group responsible for similar products 
  • Demonstrated experience with software development/management
  • Proven experience improving engineering processes and reducing NPI cycle times
  • Prior experience leading with a Design for Manufacturing approach for both legacy products and new designs
  • Experience with effectively leading teams through change
  • Experience working alongside external parties to deliver on new products as well as support existing products from a hardware and software perspective
  • Prior experience with Agile development 
  • Prior experience managing product development within budget and timing guidelines
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Process orientation and disposition toward continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals of varying backgrounds, with and without a technical background
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify issues, propose solutions, and effectively implement changes
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams at all levels and present data and recommendations

 

Education & Certifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience required
  • Master’s degree preferred

  • Hybrid – minimum of 3 days per week on site
  • Travel 25%
