Job Summary 

We are seeking a Director of Business Development to lead commercialization of our robust portfolio of technology to meet the needs of our customers and grow the business in new, innovative directions.  This is a strategic, client-facing role that will accelerate growth in utility and infrastructure markets through customer relationships, strategic channel partnerships, and industry knowledge.    Key responsibilities include managing an end-to-end sales pipeline from customer project scoping through execution of the sales contract to launch new technology and services into the market.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Aligning on the strategic market view for the business, creating commercial business plans to support the strategy, and executing business plans with collaboration among the senior leadership team as needed.  This includes:
    • Gathering and analyzing market and customer intelligence to identify and quantify opportunities for growth and margin expansion in new and emerging markets.
    • Developing and executing commercialization plans for new technology in development.
    • Working with project managers, engineering, manufacturing and appropriate sales channels to execute successful commercial launch of new products utilizing appropriate tools and standards.
    • Understanding and helping interpret the voice of customers & insights of key stakeholders
  • Prospecting, following up on new leads, meeting with customers, qualifying opportunities, generating proposals/contracts, negotiating, closing sales, and nurturing client relationships while focusing on achieving financial goals.  This role also serves as a liaison in identifying unmet needs of customers in which the ULC R&D team could be a partner in solving through the development of new technology.  
  • Building and managing strong, lasting professional relationships at all levels (C-suite through to Operations) within the gas utility industry and beyond.
  • Maintaining knowledge of our products, services, and the competitive landscape.
  • Leading and developing a sales team capable of scaling with a growing business.
  • Assisting in the planning/execution marketing campaigns.
  • Developing and managing a pipeline of qualified business development opportunities.  Maintaining accurate and comprehensive records of these opportunities and business development activities.
  • Liaise with other business units and departments as required to conduct sales activities.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing or a related field, or equivalent.  MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ sales or business development experience for business-to-business technical services / products within the utility industry. 
  • Knowledge of contracting requirements, utility industry practices, and launching new products / services into the market required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (oral, written, presentation), including active listening skills with clients and team members, to effectively understand customer’s needs
  • Financial acumen: A strong understanding of the economics behind solutions, how to present those to a C-suite audience, and requirements to achieve financial goals within complex projects.
  • Strong negotiation skills with a proven track record of efficiently and effectively closing sales
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to travel
  • Proven ability to develop strong relationships with decision makers within the utility industry
