JOB SUMMARY

 

The primary purpose of this engineering role is to be a technical resource for SPX sales personnel and SPX sales representatives.  The incumbent works in conjunction with the sales team as a key technical advisor and product advocate.  The application engineer must be able to identify and provide reliable solutions for all technical issues to assure customer satisfaction through all stages of the sales process.  The role also entails working closely with internal departments such as product management and product engineering to continuously learn and maintain product expertise.  Key success criteria include engineering application and design experience, technical skills, broad engineering knowledge, sound engineering and business judgment, strong communication skills, broad knowledge of the industry, initiative and innovation, and the ability of simultaneously keep track of multiple projects.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Maintain expert level of product knowledge and application.
  • Articulate technology and product positioning to both business and technical users.
  • Respond to functional and technical elements of RFIs/RFPs.
  • Listen, understand and convey customer requirements.
  • Perform technical and product training for sales personnel, sales representatives and customers.
  • Assist product development in developing new and/or enhanced products by communicating trends, needs and issues in the marketplace.
  • Evaluate needs of the customer and provide technical solutions that best fit the company’s product portfolio.
  • Assist in pricing special options.
  • Develop effective up-front strategies based on thorough analysis of project variables, thus maximizing the likelihood of winning jobs.
  • Provide design and specification development support to consultants and engineers.
  • Adhere to existing processes while challenging aspects when appropriate and making improvements accordingly.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • 3-5 years of experience, preferably in cooling towers or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, and Project
  • Familiarity with SAP or other ERP system
  • Familiarity with HVAC, industrial processes, power plants, or cooling towers, as well as engineering documents, desirable
  • Ability to read engineering drawings
  • Project management experience helpful
  • Ability to develop proposal strategies based on subject matter expertise
  • Ability to present technical information effectively to all levels of associates, both internally and externally
  • Strong understanding of technical and commercial project variables with the ability to proactively initiate action based on that understanding
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Strong technical aptitude
  • Strong negotiation skills both technically and commercially.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% on a monthly basis.
