JOB SUMMARY

This role’s primary purpose is to provide structural engineering for various complex cooling tower projects spanning multiple product lines including Crossflow and Counterflow and utilizing several materials (e.g., concrete, wood, steel and fiberglass).  The incumbent is responsible for using conceptual product ideas and performing necessary research, engineering, and project management to bring finished products to the marketplace. Additionally, the incumbent coordinates the efforts of multiple teams, both internally and externally, to derive a cost-effective means of new product design.  The incumbent will direct the work of other engineers and drafters.  This role also entails coordinating the efforts of the product development team to develop structurally sound solutions with drawings, engineering specifications, bills of material, quality plans and assembly procedures for new products. This role is also responsible for performing tests to verify that design functions perform appropriately.

 

Further, the incumbent must perform design calculations and evaluate the integrity of every aspect of each new product in order to meet all structural codes, design loads, and practical assembly standards and processes.  This role also involves performing technical bid evaluations, assisting in the vendor selection process, and expediting vendor manufacturing and delivery in order to meet project deadlines. The incumbent must develop a project overview, timeline and plan for achieving goals to present to the product development manager and executive team.   The incumbent may also be responsible for maintenance of current tower lines, design of new tower lines (including research, development and testing), field inspections of towers, and writing engineering specifications for tower lines or components.  Success in this role requires extensive experience in the engineering field, especially in project engineering for other constructed products, and familiarity with a wide range of structural materials and other engineering applications.  

 

Key criteria include technical skills, broad engineering knowledge, sound engineering and business judgment, strong communication skills, broad knowledge of the industry, initiative and innovation, and the ability to simultaneously keep track of multiple jobs. This advanced engineering position usually works with minimal supervision, conferring with superiors on unusual matters only, and independently develops solutions to complex technical problems.  The incumbent may be assisted by associate engineers or engineers on tasks and projects.  The assignments are broad in nature and require originality and ingenuity.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage projects and schedule tasks
  • Delegates work to designers and other engineers
  • Review, approve, and control vendor-supplied engineering documents
  • Provide support to site erection and commissioning teams
  • Develop project-specific operating and maintenance manuals 
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and improve production equipment
  • Serve as a technical consultant to sales and construction teams, both internally and in the field, as well as customers
  • Provide pricing information for new quotes
  • Execute project-specific document control
  • Develop new designs and solutions to problems
  • Write engineering specifications for tower lines and components
  • Train new engineering employees and assist internal sales team
  • Conduct product testing during development and post-installation in order to verify software and data development
  • For contractual purposes, verify and provide proof of job completion and meeting specification requirements
  • Witness third-party contractual tests
  • Sign and approve drawings for new and project specific designs and for drawings that are product standards

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil/structural engineering (required)  
  • Masters degree in structural engineering a plus
  • 6+ years of experience 


CERTIFICATIONS / OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Training and experience in using solids-based CAD & CAM software desired 
  • Skill at hand-sketching 2- and 3-D objects 
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, MathCAD, RISA2D, and RISA3D preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Has met all the educational requirements and standards to be certified as an EIT (Engineer in Training) after passing the FE exam
  • Must pass the EIT/FE exam within 2 years of BS degree or hire date, whichever is later
  • Must pass the PE exam within 6 years of BS degree, or 2 years of hire date, whichever is later
  • Knowledge of SAP or other ERP System
  • Knowledge of national building codes
  • Basic understanding of design and application of components for cooling towers
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of s of cooling tower design and structural engineering
  • Broad knowledge and application of principles, practices, and procedures of cooling tower design and structural engineering to the completion of difficult assignments
  • Expert source of product knowledge in specified area
  • Highly creative
  • Strong ability to visualize complex spatial geometry
  • Passionate about product development
  • Persistent and patient enough to work on projects for which results are not seen for long periods of time
