How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Maintenance & Capital Projects Manager, you will develop and execute the facility’s short- and long-term capital improvement strategy while providing leadership and oversight for facility maintenance operations. This role manages capital project development and execution, facility infrastructure planning, contractor and vendor coordination, preventive maintenance, and the overall performance of facility support functions through direct leadership of the Facility Coordinator and facility labor resources.

This position serves as the primary owner of facility capital planning and the central point of coordination among facility operations, Engineering, Testing Operations, Finance, Purchasing, Safety/EHS, Marketing, customers, contractors, vendors, and leadership. Success requires strong capital planning and project management capabilities, sound business judgment, effective people and vendor leadership, and a continuous improvement mindset focused on safe, reliable, efficient facility operations that support current and future business growth.

This role promotes innovation and continuous improvement in testing operations, develops technical capability within the team, and supports changes in equipment, controls, materials, and test methods that improve facility capability and performance.

 

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

 

  1. Capital Planning & Project Execution
  • Develop and maintain multi-year facility capital and infrastructure plans that support business growth, testing requirements, equipment integration, utility capacity, and facility expansion.
  • Define capital project scope, objectives, schedules, budgets, resource requirements, and business justifications; prepare capital authorization requests and supporting documentation.
  • Lead capital projects from concept through completion, monitoring schedule, budget, safety, operational impact, and project closeout requirements.
  • Support annual capital budgeting and forecasting, track spending against approved authorizations, and prioritize investments based on business objectives and facility needs.

 

  1. Facility Maintenance & Operational Readiness
  • Oversee facility maintenance and support services through the Facility Coordinator, establishing priorities that maintain safe, reliable, and effective facility operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor preventive maintenance plans for facility assets and building systems, coordinating activities with operational schedules to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain visibility to facility condition, utility reliability and capacity, operational readiness, and future infrastructure needs; identify maintenance-related capital improvement opportunities.
  • Partner with the Test Operations Supervisor to align facility availability, infrastructure capabilities, maintenance activities, and capital projects with current and future testing requirements.

 

  1. Contractor, Vendor & Procurement Management
  • Develop bid packages and request-for-quotation documentation, coordinate contractor site visits, evaluate proposals, and support contractor and vendor selection decisions.
  • Serve as the facility liaison during construction and improvement projects, monitoring contractor performance, safety compliance, schedule adherence, quality, and budget performance.
  • Coordinate purchase requisitions, purchase orders, project purchases, and supporting records in partnership with Purchasing and Finance while ensuring expenditures remain within approved authorizations.
  • Manage contracted labor and external service providers as required to support maintenance, facility improvements, capital execution, and operational readiness.

 

  1. Team Leadership, Stakeholder Support & Continuous Improvement
  • Provide direct leadership, performance management, coaching, and development for the Facility Coordinator and applicable facility labor resources while promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and customers to identify and prioritize facility improvements supporting testing, training, customer visits, operational effectiveness, and business growth.
  • Ensure facility readiness for customer visits, tours, audits, training, and special events while supporting compliance with applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor facility performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency, cost effectiveness, customer experience, and long-term infrastructure capability.

 

What we are looking for (Required/Ideal Experience, Skills, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

 

Required Experience & Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in facilities management, maintenance management, capital project management, manufacturing operations, construction management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing capital expenditure budgets, facility improvement projects, and long-range infrastructure plans.
  • Experience leading employees, contractors, vendors, service providers, and cross-functional project teams.
  • Strong capital planning, project management, budgeting, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of facility infrastructure systems including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, utilities, and building support systems.
  • Experience preparing capital appropriation requests, project justifications, budget forecasts, bid packages, and project documentation.
  • Strong contractor and vendor management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships across internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project planning or scheduling tools; demonstrated commitment to safety, operational reliability, and continuous improvement.

 

Ideal Experience & Skills

  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial testing, engineering laboratory, research, or other technically complex facility environments preferred.
  • Experience with utility upgrades, facility renovation or expansion, SAP or similar procurement/capital authorization systems, and Lean or Six Sigma methodologies preferred.

 

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, Business Administration, Industrial Technology, or a related discipline required; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • PMP or similar project management certification preferred.

 

Travel & Working Environment

  • Onsite office environment, Monday – Friday
  • The position may require working occasionally outside normal work hours. 
  • Lifting up to 70 pounds.
  • Bending and stooping.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally.
  • Working at heights less than 50 feet above ground.
  • Work with exposure to bad weather and/or excessive heat.
