Asa Maintenance and Automation Technician,you will play a crucial role inthe installation, programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining the automation systems throughout the manufacturing facility. The Controls Technician works closely with maintenance, engineering, and production teams to minimize downtime and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Reporting totheMaintenance Manager, this jobalso canbe assigned special projects to support factory safety, sustainability,growth,and development. 

 

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities) 

 

While each day brings new opportunitiesatSPX, your core responsibilities will be: 

 

  • Installation, troubleshooting, and repair of robotic and automated systems.
  • Program, modify, and maintain Robotics, PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and industrial networks.
  • Diagnose electrical, instrumentation, and controls-related issues using appropriate test equipment.
  • Lead the installation, startup, and commissioning of new equipment and automation projects.
  • Maintain control panel documentation, electrical schematics, and program backups.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on automation and control systems.
  • Assist in root cause analysis and corrective action activities for recurring equipment failures.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and electrical standards.
  • Collaborate with production and maintenance teams to optimize equipment performance and reliability.
  • Recommend and implement continuous improvement opportunities that increase efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Support plant capital projects and equipment upgrades as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of controls-related spare parts and components. 

 

What we are looking for (Required/Ideal Experience, Skills, Education) 

 

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has: 

 

Required Experience & Skills 

 

  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or related technical field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 4 years of automation or controls experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience installing, programming, troubleshooting, and repairing PLC systems such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, Beckhoff, or Mitsubishi.
  • Experience installing, programming, troubleshooting, and repairing robotic systems such as KUKA, ABB, Fanuc, or Yaskawa
  • Working knowledge of HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, and industrial communications networks.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems and industrial data collection systems.
  • Knowledge of CAD programs (Solidworks/Autocad)
  • Experience with Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, Profinet, or similar networks.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder logic, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
  • Proficiency using electrical testing equipment including multimeters and calibration tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • NFPA 70E Arc Flash and OSHA 10/30 certifications 
  • Responsible, self-motivated, and a good team player 
  • Knowledge and practical experience with standard computer applications 
  • Adhering to OSHA regulations and using safety equipment.

 

Travel & Working Environment 

 

  • Manufacturing plant environment 
  • External training at existing SPX locations including Olathe, KS and Montreal, Quebec
