How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As the Safety Specialist, you will support the EHS Manager in the execution and administration of environmental, health, and safety programs within the facility.
In this role, you will serve as a visible presence on the production floor, helping drive safe behaviors, ensuring compliance with established procedures, supporting training initiatives, and assisting with incident prevention efforts. The Safety Specialist plays a key role in reinforcing a strong safety culture through proactive hazard identification, employee engagement, and timely follow-through on corrective actions.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
- Compliance with Health & Safety Regulations
- Assist in maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local environmental health and safety regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.)
- Support implementation and administration of site-specific EHS policies and procedures
- Maintain safety records, documentation, permits, and compliance files
- Assist in managing SDS database and chemical inventory
- Support waste management processes, including proper handling and storage of solid, universal, and hazardous waste
2. Floor Presence, Inspections & Risk Identification
- Conduct routine safety inspections and audits of production areas
- Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and communicate findings to supervisors
- Track corrective actions to ensure timely closure
- Assist in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments
- Participate in 5S and continuous improvement events from a safety perspective
3. Incident Investigation & Reporting
- Assist with investigation of workplace injuries, near misses, and property damage incidents
- Gather facts, conduct interviews, and document findings
- Support root cause analysis efforts (5Y, 8D, etc.)
- Maintain OSHA logs and injury/illness records under direction of the EHS Manager
- Track action items resulting from investigations and audits
4. Training & Employee Engagement
- Conduct new hire safety orientation
- Deliver and coordinate required safety training (PPE, Lockout/Tagout, forklift awareness, hazard communication, emergency response, etc.)
- Support supervisors with safety talks and employee coaching
- Participate in safety committee meetings and engagement initiatives
- Promote awareness campaigns and safety communications across the facility
- Continues Improvement
- Assist in tracking EHS metrics and preparing monthly reports
- Maintain audit trackers and action item logs
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing injuries and environmental impact
- Provide recommendations to improve safety processes and programs
What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)
We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:
Required Experience
- 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing safety or EHS role
- Working knowledge of OSHA standards and general safety compliance requirements
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience supporting Lockout/Tagout programs and machine guarding
- Experience assisting with forklift training and safety audits
- Familiarity with environmental compliance processes
- Basic understanding of continuous improvement methodologies
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating cross-functionally
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence safe behaviors on the production floor
- Analytical skills with ability to support data tracking and reporting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Education & Certifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental Health, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Technology, or related field preferred
- OSHA 30 certification preferred
- First Aid/CPR certification preferred
Travel & Working Environment
- Onsite; plant and office environment
- Regular presence on the production floor
- May be exposed to noise, varying temperatures, and manufacturing equipment
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods
