How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
SPX Technologies is a collaborative organization where every employee contributes to our success. The Lead Solution Architect – Engineering & Commercial Systems is responsible for leading the architecture of all engineering and commercial systems and for directing the design, development, and continuous improvement of the company’s portfolio of custom, in-house .NET applications that support its commercial systems functions. This role sets the technical direction for how the company’s CRM, CPQ, ERP, and PLM platforms — including Salesforce (CRM), SAP (ERP), and the Boomi integrations that connect them — are designed, integrated, and evolved to support the engineering and go-to-market processes of the business.
Combining hands-on software engineering depth with current, relevant solution architecture leadership, this role leads the team of developers — assigning tasks, setting standards, and ensuring a high-performing delivery team. A central expectation is leading the adoption of AI across the software development lifecycle — applying AI and agentic software engineering techniques to accelerate new development, modernize and maintain legacy code, and raise the bar on refactoring, testing, and quality assurance.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
- Lead the architecture of all engineering and commercial systems:
- Own the end-to-end solution architecture for the company’s engineering and commercial systems, setting technical direction, standards, design patterns, and the integration strategy across CRM, CPQ, ERP, and PLM platforms.
- Translate business and engineering requirements into scalable, secure, and well-documented architectures, balancing out-of-the-box capability against configuration and custom development.
- Design and govern integrations across the company’s CRM, CPQ, ERP, and PLM platforms — including Salesforce, SAP, and Boomi-based integrations — ensuring reliable data flow, master data integrity, and maintainable interfaces across the enterprise application landscape.
- Evaluate and select technologies, frameworks, and tools; assess and mitigate technical risk; and ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture, security, and compliance standards.
- Lead the development of custom engineering and commercial applications:
- Direct the design, development, enhancement, and support of a portfolio of custom, in-house .NET applications that serve the company’s commercial systems functions, including CRM, CPQ, and quote-to-cash.
- Stay hands-on in design and code — setting coding standards, leading design and code reviews, and resolving the most complex technical challenges across the Java and .NET code base.
- Ensure custom applications are reliable, performant, maintainable, and well integrated with the company’s CRM, CPQ, ERP, and PLM systems.
- Lead the AI-driven transformation of the software development process:
- Define and drive the team’s strategy for using AI across the full software development lifecycle — new code development, legacy code maintenance and modernization, refactoring, testing, and quality assurance.
- Introduce and scale agentic software engineering practices and AI-assisted development tooling, establishing standards, guardrails, and quality controls for responsible, secure, AI-accelerated delivery.
- Measure and continuously improve code quality, developer productivity, and delivery velocity through effective adoption of AI tools and engineering practices.
- Lead and develop a high-performing development team:
- Lead the team of developers — assigning tasks, setting priorities, removing blockers, and ensuring on-time, high-quality delivery.
- Lead a blended team of employee and vendor developers across onshore, nearshore, and offshore locations, coordinating work across time zones to deliver as one team.
- Manage development vendors and third-party partners — setting expectations, overseeing deliverables and quality, and holding partners accountable to committed outcomes.
- Establish engineering best practices, and coach and mentor developers to raise overall team capability, including in AI-assisted engineering.
- Manage delivery across multiple concurrent initiatives, balancing project work, enhancements, and production support.
- Partner across the business and deliver with quality:
- Partner with engineering, sales, operations, and IT stakeholders to understand needs, shape technology roadmaps, and communicate technical direction, status, and trade-offs in clear business language.
- Develop and maintain architecture documentation, solution and integration designs, technical specifications, and standards.
- Safeguard company data and support effective system controls, security, data integrity, and compliance across engineering and commercial applications.
What we are looking for (Required/Ideal Experience, Skills, Education)
We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building and supporting enterprise applications, with a strong foundation in Java and/or .NET.
- At least 3 years in a solution architecture role, with recent, demonstrable experience designing and implementing complex solutions and integrations across CRM, CPQ, and ERP platforms such as Salesforce and SAP. Candidates must already operate at a senior architecture level — this is not an entry-level or training architecture position.
- Demonstrated ability to architect across multiple solution domains — CRM, CPQ, ERP, PLM, and custom .NET application development — rather than deep expertise in a single platform or domain.
- Proven experience leading the design and development of custom enterprise applications from concept through delivery and ongoing support.
- Demonstrated experience using AI to transform the software development process — including new code development, legacy code maintenance and refactoring, testing, quality assurance, and agentic software engineering.
- Experience leading a team of developers — assigning work, setting standards, mentoring, and ensuring high-performing delivery.
- Experience managing development vendors and third-party partners — defining scope, overseeing deliverables, quality, and SLAs, and holding partners accountable to committed outcomes.
- Experience leading and collaborating with distributed teams across nearshore and offshore locations and time zones.
- Strong domain experience with CRM and CPQ (e.g., Salesforce), and with integrations across ERP (e.g., SAP) and PLM.
- Hands-on experience designing and building enterprise integrations using an integration platform / iPaaS such as Boomi to connect CRM, ERP, PLM, and custom applications.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Authorized to work in the United States and able to work effectively in a fully remote, U.S.-based capacity.
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Experience architecting and integrating engineering and commercial systems in a manufacturing or engineered-products environment.
- Hands-on experience with modern AI-assisted development tools and agentic coding workflows (e.g., AI coding assistants / pair programming, automated code generation, AI-assisted testing and code review).
- Experience with quote-to-cash, product configuration and selection (CPQ), or sales representative management solutions.
- Experience with API and integration platforms, middleware, microservices, and event-driven or service-oriented architecture (SOA).
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure or AWS) and modern DevOps / CI-CD practices.
- Experience with SQL, data modeling, and enterprise master data management.
- Experience delivering in Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid environments.
CERTIFICATION/OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, secure coding, and integration best practices.
- Strong knowledge of CRM, CPQ, ERP, and PLM concepts and how they integrate to support engineering and commercial processes.
- Ability to balance hands-on technical contribution with architectural leadership and team management.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with a focus on scalable, maintainable solutions.
- Continuous-improvement and innovation mindset, with a track record of adopting emerging technologies — especially AI — to improve quality, speed, and developer productivity.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, lead through influence, and deliver with limited oversight.
- Architecture or cloud certifications (e.g., TOGAF, Microsoft Azure or AWS Solutions Architect) are a plus.
