How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. The Senior Manager of Engineering - Controls, provides direct supervision, demand forecasting / planning, and process management of technical product support for electrical and control equipment for heat exchange products.  The Senior Manager of Engineering – Controls has accountability and responsibility for the full product development lifecycle (idea to product launch) and the product delivery lifecycle from quote through customer field support.  Activities include new product research and development, engineering verification / testing, quality and cost-effectiveness analysis, continuous improvement including value analysis – value engineering (VAVE), and field start-up support including commissioning and warranty. 

 

This role encourages innovation and continuously improves efficiency of technical support, monitors advances of technology and competition, and supports global and acquisition-related technical issues in areas of expertise.

 

This role has global reach, providing technical guidance to regional engineering teams for application of a global product.  This role coordinates closely with global counterparts in the Asia Pacific, and EMEA regions to standardize processes, methods, and product design where possible while meeting regional requirements.

 

This role will also work alongside the sales team, analyzing customer specifications, providing quote support, and presenting findings to clients. Effective supervision and stakeholder communication are essential.  The incumbent will manage a team that will be the authority on controls product design for the business, providing technical support, and controls training as appropriate.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

 

  1. Supervise and Lead Technical Teams
  • Oversee engineers and technicians to ensure service requests, calculations, and designs meet specifications and codes and can be delivered with high quality.
  • Address personnel matters, including performance appraisals, and manage training programs across the Americas and globally as needed.
  • Ensure engineering capacity aligns with current and projected service demand.

 

  1. Manage Controls Product Development, Operations and Customer Support
  • Respond to technical service requests related to quotations, contracts, and projects, including drafting reports and communications.
  • Support sales by conducting site data analysis, presenting findings to customers, and working in the field (10-15% travel, including international).
  • Set objectives and maintain KPIs to track and improve performance in technical service activities.

 

  1.   Financial Oversight and Process Improvement 
  • Develop and manage operating budgets for the cost center, implementing processes to minimize variances.
  • Attend internal and external meetings to gather information, analyze data, and apply insight for process improvements.
  • Provide support for Asia Pacific and EMEA regions when required, ensuring cohesive global service.

Required Experience & Skills

  • 5+ years of experience with electric and controls systems
  • Knowledge of Electrical Codes and Compliance 
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical systems, controls products, and related markets
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills, with ability to identify issues, propose solutions, and effectively implement changes.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-function teams at all levels (production to management) and present data and recommendations verbally and in written form to management.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications, including the ability to develop summary graphs, tables, pivot tables, and other reports.

 

Ideal Experience & Skills

  • Technical aptitude and strong technical knowledge of HVAC products and Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Understanding of ERP system, BOM creation and document management.
  • Strategic decision-making skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Formal exposure to process improvement methodology
  • Strong knowledge of functions relevant to product engineering including purchasing, product engineering, production, cost analysis, quality, continuous improvement, and customer service
  • Ability to use test equipment to support the analysis and validation of controls equipment, software, and systems. 
  • Professional Engineer License

 

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation or related field

  • Quality – Number of CAPA items
  • Delivery – On-time rate for Engineering Database CAP lines

  • Delivery – On-time rate for product development projects
  • Cost – Cost Center budget conformance
  • Cost – Estimated versus actual engineering hours for development projects

 

Travel & Working Environment

  • Onsite office environment, Monday – Friday; Hybrid work schedule available after satisfactory completion of probationary period.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, about 10-15% of the time.
  • The position may require working occasionally outside normal work hours. 
  • On-site at times exposed to bad weather, excessive heat and/or excessive noise
  • Various vendor and customer sites for access to electrical equipment
  • Lifting 10-30 pounds.
  • Keyboarding/typing.
  • Ability to read effectively from a computer screen and/or a paper copy.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work and perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally.
