As part of HVAC Cooling, SPX Cooling Technologies is a leader in high quality industrial HVAC equipment used to cool large facilities like hospitals, data centers, and power plants. With cooling towers, fans, and refrigeration units, companies rely on brands like Marley, Recold, and SGS to provide comfort and mission critical and industrial cooling solutions.
How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Modifier, you will be responsible for making all customer preference modifications to the cooling towers. The position may assume additional duties as assigned. The successful incumbent will be detail oriented, able to follow instructions, and work well in a team atmosphere.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
- Assembly and Fabrication
- Identify parts using the build order and coordinate with the correct template or engineering drawing.
- Measure components’ positions and perform accurate cutting within the cooling tower using the correct tools and templates.
- Grind edges using a grinder and perform plasma cutting and welding according to tower specifications.
- Reference engineering drawings for solid or tack welding and relocate components using the overhead crane.
- Quality Control and Testing
- Perform leak testing to ensure component integrity.
- Conduct maintenance on tools like torches when needed.
- Accurately interpret build orders, engineering drawings, blueprints, and sketches.
- Ensure all fabrication tasks adhere to safety protocols, using tools and equipment effectively.
- Support and Collaboration
- Support the assembly line as needed, ensuring smooth operation.
- Place welded components on carts and fixtures for transfer to the next station.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure the assembly process follows the build order and engineering specifications.
What we are looking for (Required/Ideal Experience, Skills, Education)
We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:
Required Experience & Skills
- Ability to adapt to change and flex work at appropriate times so as to support the assembly process
- Ability to safely and effectively operate cutting tools
- Ability to correctly use measuring tools and grinder
- Ability to correctly use crane and air float
- Ability to correctly and safely use other hand tools (both manual and pneumatic)
- Ability to read a tape measure in metric and imperial standards
- Ability to apply shop mathematics to solve problems
- Ability to plan work and select proper tools
- Ability to compare and accurately determine difference in size, shape, and form of objects
- Ability to work within precise limits and/or standards of accuracy
- Ability to interpret build orders and engineering drawings correctly
- Ability to operate impact gun and torque wrench
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to follow and understand directions
Ideal Experience & Skills
- Previous experience in tower basin fabrication preferred
Education & Certifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- AWS D1.1 welding certification required
Travel & Working Environment
- Onsite – manufacturing plant environment, with potential exposure to all types of weather, including excessive heat, excessive cold, and excessive noise
- Lifting up to 50 pounds; 50+ pounds with assistance
- Sitting, standing, walking, bending, grasping, pushing, pulling, crawling, climbing, twisting, reaching, working at heights, and using a ladder as required
- Ability to use both hands overhead
- Perform repetitive motions
